The setup

A son returns from college to a quiet house and finds only Veronica, his father's wife, who greets him warmly and explains that rule one is to do as she says. He tries to hold onto the fact that he has a girlfriend and gets a call that she is arriving tomorrow. Rule two follows quickly: no phone calls to her today. A hot tub, a ten-minute shower deadline and a morning robe later, episode 2 has her adding another rule about not pretending last night never happened, with the girlfriend ringing the bell outside.

Why it is worth the time

The structure is the fun part. Each rule is a new little power move, and the ticking clock of the girlfriend's visit keeps the tension honest. It moves fast and the stepmother has real swagger.
