The setup

Mom turns fifty on Saturday, and the daughter is putting together a surprise party for forty guests. The plan needs her stepdad to keep Mom away from home, and the two of them act normal when she walks in. Behind the scenes, the daughter has also contacted Aunt Sarah, Mom's stepsister, who has not been in touch for years. In episode 2 she shows him the decorations and admits she took the planning job to get a whole week under his roof. Then Mom comes home early.
