The setup

During a week at court, the queen dispatches her loveliest servant to help the king get dressed. He is bored, formal and married to someone distant. The servant turns out to be bolder than she looks, and the king notices that nobody has ever stood up for her. Episode 1 ends with a midnight invitation to turn down his bed. In episode 2 she tells him she has been quietly watching him from below stairs for a year, and warns that this could get them both hanged. Then the queen knocks, and the bedchamber door is locked.

Why it is worth the time

It is a romance with real emotional stakes: two people crossing a social wall. The danger of the queen overhearing keeps every scene tense. Plenty of tension for a short runtime.

Best night for it

A night when you want a costume-drama feel with a warm center and a bit of risk.
